Chris Difford of Squeeze anticipates upcoming album release and performance in Brighton.
Squeeze co-founder Chris Difford expressed his excitement at the prospect of performing songs that were written over 50 years ago at the band’s upcoming Brighton tour date. These songs, compiled into their new album Trixies, were initially penned by Difford and bandmate Glen Tilbrook back in 1974. Looking back, Difford shared that they were unable to properly produce the songs at the time, but a chance revisit of the cassette tape found in the loft last year convinced them of the songs’ worth.
The Tried, Tested, and Trixies Tour, slated for next year, will culminate in December at the Brighton Centre, with special guest Billy Bragg joining the band for the occasion. Reflecting on their enduring partnership, Difford emphasized that maintaining “a fair amount of distance” over the years has played a pivotal role in keeping things fresh and vibrant between himself and Tilbrook.
Since their formation in 1973, Squeeze has garnered success with top ten hits such as Cool for Cats, Labelled with Love, and Up the Junction, a song that opens with the iconic line: “I never thought it would happen with me and the girl from Clapham.” Now, fifty years later, the band is set to breathe new life into tunes crafted when Difford was 19 and Tilbrook was just 16.
The experience of revisiting their youthful creations has been profoundly moving for Difford, who described reconnecting with their younger selves as “hugely emotional.” While the songs were a joy to write, they did not quite fit the band’s style at the time. Bringing these teenage compositions to the stage now feels like the perfect timing for Squeeze, offering fans something fresh and unique to enjoy.
Tickets for the upcoming tour are now available for purchase, and fans can look forward to the release of Trixies on March 6th next year. As Squeeze gears up to share these rediscovered gems with their audience, there’s a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air for what promises to be a memorable musical journey.
