Xiu Xiu to release covers album featuring songs by Robyn, Talking Heads, and more
Xiu Xiu members are individuals of refined taste, as evidenced by their extensive discography of innovative and thought-provoking music, as well as their choice of covers. Their repertoire includes renditions of iconic tracks such as New Order’s “Ceremony” and David Bowie and Queen’s “Under Pressure,” as well as entire tribute albums dedicated to the music of Nina Simone and the Twin Peaks series. Through their Bandcamp subscription service, known as Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu, the band has been consistently delivering new covers in recent years.
Scheduled for release in January, Xiu Xiu will unveil a collection of these covers titled Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1. Featuring interpretations by Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo, the album will showcase their unique take on songs by artists such as Robyn, GloRilla, Talking Heads, This Heat, Throbbing Gristle, Coil, the Normal/Grace Jones, Soft Cell, Roy Orbison, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Additionally, alongside this announcement, they have shared their renditions of the Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb” and Daniel Johnston’s “Some Things Last A Long Time.”
In a statement, Xiu Xiu expressed their longstanding relationship with cover songs, having produced three full cover albums. Their primary goal with these projects has always been to express gratitude towards the original songs. Each cover represents a piece of music that has resonated with them, and delving deep into these tracks serves as a respectful tribute to the creativity that birthed them. Their approach is not about attempting to improve upon the originals but rather about learning from them and paying homage to their influence.
Reflecting on the recent releases, Stewart shared his emotional response to performing Daniel Johnston’s song, admitting to shedding tears while singing it. He praised Johnston’s unmatched sincerity and emotional depth in his music. On the other hand, Stewart showcased excitement for their cover of the Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” expressing admiration for Joan Jett and the rebellious spirit encapsulated in the song.
The tracklist for Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1 is divided into two sides. Side A features covers of iconic songs like “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads, “Warm Leatherette” originally by The Normal/Grace Jones, and “I Put a Spell on You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, among others.
