Suspect in DC pipe bomb case confesses to placing explosives near DNC, RNC: reports

A suspect from Virginia has confessed to planting pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters the day before the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Brian Cole Jr., who was 30 years old at the time, made this admission to investigative sources. Despite not entering a plea during his initial court appearance, Cole was ordered to remain in custody pending a detention hearing on December 15.

The charges against Cole include transporting explosives across state lines with the intent to kill, injure, and cause damage, as well as attempting malicious destruction through explosive materials. The arrest of Cole occurred after he allegedly placed the devices outside the political party offices on the evening of January 5, 2021. These explosives were discovered 17 hours later, just before supporters of then-President Trump stormed the Capitol building, resulting in a delay in certifying the 2020 election result.

Authorities indicate that Cole believed in the claims suggesting Trump, not Biden, had won the election, even though his motive remains vague due to conflicting statements given during a lengthy interview by investigators. Despite a national Republican operative denying any links between Cole and Trump support, it was revealed that Cole did not have party affiliations in Virginia and had not taken part in primary elections, although he did vote in general elections between 2016 to 2024.
