Tosin Abasi hints at new evolution of Abasi Concepts
Tosin Abasi, the mastermind behind Animals as Leaders and Abasi Concepts, has been a driving force in reshaping the modern guitar scene. At Abasi Concepts, where he serves as CEO, he is constantly exploring new frontiers of guitar sound and design. With the recent expansion into pedals, Abasi is at the forefront of incorporating amp modelers and plugins into the conversation about guitar tones.
“Abasi Concepts was always designed to encompass more than just guitar design,” Abasi explains in an interview with Premier Guitar. The brand’s mission is to explore a wide range of solutions, and the company’s expansion into pedals and software reflects this ethos. One significant collaboration for Abasi Concepts is with Neural DSP, resulting in the Archetype: Abasi plugin suite, which could pave the way for new innovations from Abasi Concepts in the future.
While software is a new territory for Abasi Concepts, Abasi emphasizes his and COO Ivan Chopik’s love for tube amplifiers. “There’s no substitute for playing an amp in a room,” Abasi says. The tactile experience of plugging into an amp and feeling the sound resonate in a physical space is something that cannot be replicated by modelers. Although modelers have their strengths, especially in a mixed recording environment, Abasi still values the authentic connection to sound that comes from using traditional amps.
In a chat with Guitar World, Abasi delves further into his views on amp modelers, pointing out that their use often depends on the specific context of a performance or recording session. While he acknowledges the high quality of modelers, such as those produced by Neural DSP, he stresses that there is a distinct difference between the sound produced by modelers and the organic warmth of a tube amp in a room. For Abasi, it’s not about pitting one against the other; he sees value in both approaches and appreciates the unique qualities each brings to the table.
Looking ahead, Animals as Leaders, Abasi’s band, has exciting plans, with the recent announcement of their support slot on the upcoming SatchVai Band’s inaugural U.S. tour.
