AT&T Stadium sending refrigerated grass for World Cup
The forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to make its way to Texas, and AT&T Stadium is putting in significant efforts to ensure that it leaves a lasting impression on the global stage. In preparation for hosting Argentina’s soccer sensation Lionel Messi next June during the World Cup’s North Texas visit, the Arlington arena has undergone an extensive $300 million renovation, as reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
However, the most notable transformation doesn’t involve high-tech video boards or exclusive suites; instead, it’s centered around the playing field itself. Due to FIFA’s requirement for natural grass at all World Cup venues, AT&T Stadium’s typical artificial turf is being replaced. This shift to natural grass is also being mirrored at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
While many stadiums opt to cultivate grass locally, AT&T Stadium is taking a unique approach. The World Cup pitch will be grown on a farm in Colorado before being shipped to Texas just prior to the tournament. To ensure the grass remains in top condition, it will be transported in refrigerated semi-trucks, safeguarding its quality from farm to field without compromising the playing surface. Additionally, a secondary field will be cultivated as a backup, recognizing the high stakes and level of play associated with the prestigious event.
According to Cowboys executive Chad Estis, this process presents uncharted territory for AT&T Stadium. While the venue has previously installed temporary grass fields for short tournaments like the Gold Cup, the World Cup demands a more specialized and meticulous approach. This tailored field is being designed with elite, international-level play in mind, where every aspect, including the grass itself, impacts the game.
AT&T Stadium is poised to be a significant fixture in the 2026 World Cup, playing host to nine matches, more than any other venue, including a pivotal semifinal on July 14. In comparison, Houston will hold seven games, with its final match scheduled for July 4. The spotlight will undoubtedly be on global soccer icons like Messi and Ronaldo, as they grace the fields of Texas, with AT&T Stadium showcasing its newly acquired natural grass, shipped from across state lines in specialized refrigerated trucks.
It’s clear that when it comes to hosting an event as prestigious as the World Cup, AT&T Stadium is going above and beyond to set the stage and make a lasting impact. The world will be watching as the 2026 World Cup unfolds in America, and AT&T Stadium stands at the forefront, ready to welcome the biggest names in soccer on its specially cultivated, top-of-the-line playing surface.
