Joe Duplantier Discusses Gojira’s Decision to Not Perform Full Album Shows Live

Full album performances have become commonplace, especially for anniversaries, yet Gojira has no intentions of following suit and playing their albums in full at any live show, including their 2005 release From Mars to Sirius.

Gojira lead vocalist Joe Duplantier recently shared in an interview with Rolling Stone France that he believes listening to an album at home is a far different experience than experiencing a band live on stage: “We already tried it in rehearsal, but it doesn’t work. For me, listening to an album is like lying down, headphones on, immersed in a story, experiencing some unexpected twists.” Duplicating the studio magic in a live setting could diminish the energy and dynamic of a live performance, which was already exemplified through Gojira’s recent live recording of From Mars to Sirius.

Regarding the much-anticipated new album set to release in 2026, Duplantier disclosed that the band has been developing the record both on tour and in the studio: “We have a mobile studio, so we can also work on it while on tour. [The album is gradually taking shape and] we have some solid foundations and some tracks already have demos.” Disagreements among the band members have sparked new ideas, refining Gojira’s message and continuing to evolve their sound.

Drummer Mario Duplantier reiterated at Bloodstock Open Air festival that the album is well underway, with drums, guitars, and bass already recorded: “We needed that time, I think, just to make sure we are all on the same page, to ensure what Gojira is bringing next is strong enough.” The 2026 release date signifies the established band’s attention to detail and the need to deliver something fresh and innovative, ensuring a successful addition to their discography.

The band’s as-yet-untitled album, teased by Duplantier in a separate interview, promises a return to powerful guitar riffs and a modern metal sound, with only two more songs left to refine. Reflecting on the journey to completion, Duplantier expressed that the band’s matured tastes and vast experience in the industry have influenced the album’s production process, leading to a thoughtful and impactful final product.

In conclusion, while the band has faced challenges during the creative process, the dedication to presenting a refined and potent musical experience for their fans remains unwavering, further solidifying Gojira’s position as a leading force in the metal genre.
