Controversial singer reveals plans for Ska punk band reunion in Boston
uced a video for RFK Jr. to promote an anti-vaxx rally leading up to his 2024 presidential campaign, according to Rolling Stone. In 2022, Barrett also parted ways with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after 18 years as the late-night show’s announcer because Barrett refused to get the Covid vaccine.
“I stand firmly in the things I believe in,” Barrett told the New Times last year. “So, OK, this is my candidate I support. I found out who he was, I’ve met the man. I didn’t take it lightly, and that’s who I support.”
Since the Bosstones ended, Barrett formed a new punk rock band called The Defiant. The supergroup also features Greg Camp of Smash Mouth, drummer Pete Parada of The Offspring, guitarist Joey LaRocca of The Briggs, and bassist Johnny Rioux of The Street Dogs.
A ska punk band that rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s is reportedly planning a reunion after several years since their disbandment. The lead singer of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dicky Barrett, recently took to social media to announce his efforts in reuniting the band, as revealed in an Instagram Story shared on 23 Punk.
With fans eagerly anticipating their return, Barrett acknowledged their sentiments, expressing his active endeavors in bringing The Mighty Mighty Bosstones back together. While the specifics of this reunion remain undisclosed, including the possibility of a tour, new music, or both, Barrett’s commitment to the band’s revival is evident.
Established in Boston in 1983, The Bosstones, initially comprising original members such as Barrett, Tim Bridewell, Nate Albert, Joe Gittleman, Josh Dalsimer, Tim “Johnny Vegas” Burton, and dancer Ben Carr, were trailblazers in fusing ska with punk. Their debut album “Devils Night Out” in 1989 marked the start of their musical journey, leading to mainstream success with their 1997 release “Let’s Face It,” featuring the chart-topping single “The Impression That I Get.”
Following their hiatus in 2002, the band regrouped for live performances in 2007 and continued to release albums in subsequent years. Despite their productive comeback, The Bosstones bid farewell to their fans in 2022, citing their decision to disband after years of shared experiences and creative collaboration. Expressing gratitude to their dedicated supporters, the group acknowledged the pivotal role their fans played in their musical endeavors.
The dissolution of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones came amidst controversy surrounding Barrett’s stand on vaccination politics, particularly his public support for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and his anti-vaccination stance. Barrett’s steadfast beliefs led to his departure from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2022, following his refusal to receive the Covid vaccine.
Undeterred by these challenges, Barrett embarked on a new musical venture, forming the punk rock band, The Defiant. Teaming up with accomplished musicians such as Greg Camp, Pete Parada, Joey LaRocca, and Johnny Rioux, Barrett continues to pursue his passion for music and performance beyond his tenure with The Bosstones.
