Japanese 20-year-old singer and songwriter, Rol3ert, has released his latest single ‘(how could I be) honest?’ on December 17 as part of a series of consecutive releases over three months. This single is the most fragile and emotional work Rol3ert has ever created to date.
Musically, ‘(how could I be) honest?’ emerges as an alternative dance-rock song with the fastest tempo and most intense distortion in Rol3ert’s discography. Filled with sharp guitar riffs and synths, as well as booming synth bass, the song brings forth a fiery energy that contrasts with its highly personal lyrics. These lyrics serve as internal screams about anxiety, loneliness, and despair, expressing a desire to be understood and found amidst the confusion of young age.
Long-time collaborator of Rol3ert, MONJOE, returns as the producer, shaping layered and chaotic sounds inspired by the musician’s early demos. The mixing and mastering process is handled by D.O.I., a significant figure in the Japanese hip-hop production world, who adds a unique touch to the bass and vocals, creating unconventional and character-filled sound textures. Thematically, the song serves as a subtle resistance against a culture that normalizes the suppression of emotions, while also encouraging listeners to bravely confront their vulnerabilities.
As his career continues to soar, Rol3ert solidifies his position as a unique voice in the new generation of Japanese musicians. Throughout 2025, he has achieved significant milestones ranging from sold-out acoustic concerts, performances at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL and SWEET LOVE SHOWER, to winning the Best Breakthrough Artist at the Tokyo Alter Music Award 2025.
With momentum also growing in Southeast Asia, Rol3ert will continue his journey through a major concert entitled “katachi” on February 27, 2026, at Shibuya WWW X, marking his first solo concert with a full band lineup.
