Jonas Nachsin Reflects on 30 Years in Rock and Metal, Collaborating with Acts like Slipknot
Jonas Nachsin’s career in the music industry spans over three decades, during which he has played a pivotal role in propelling some of metal and rock’s most influential acts to global success. Starting in the late 1980s at a distribution warehouse in Queens, New York, Jonas began his journey selling records to independent stores. One fortuitous encounter with Roadrunner Records founder Cees Wessels set him on a path to becoming a key player in the commercial breakthrough of contemporary rock and metal music.
At Roadrunner Records, Jonas worked with groundbreaking artists like Sepultura, Slipknot, and Type O Negative. Through his efforts, these acts transitioned from the underground scene to mainstream prominence, reshaping the landscape of heavy music in the process. During his initial stint at Roadrunner from 1988 to 1992, followed by a four-year tenure at PolyGram, Jonas gained valuable experience that would inform his future endeavors in the industry.
Returning to Roadrunner in 1996, Jonas was later appointed President of the label in 1999, a position he held until 2012. Under his watch, Roadrunner experienced explosive growth fueled by the monumental success of Slipknot and Nickelback, bands that redefined the commercial possibilities for metal and rock music. Reflecting on his time at Roadrunner, Jonas emphasizes the label’s role in connecting artists with their audiences, stating, “Our job is to help find fans who will love this music and develop a relationship with the artist making it.”
In 2013, Jonas joined Universal Music Group’s Spinefarm, tasked with expanding the label’s global footprint. Founded in Finland in 1990 and acquired by Universal Music Group in 2002, Spinefarm’s rich legacy was amplified under Jonas’s leadership. By signing breakthrough acts like Sleep Token and nurturing talents such as Dayseeker, Dead Poet Society, Creeper, and Kid Kapichi, Spinefarm solidified its position as a formidable force in the rock genre.
Jonas’s vision for Spinefarm extends beyond traditional rock and metal boundaries with the establishment of imprint Snakefarm, dedicated to Roots/Country and blues-based rock ‘n’ roll music. From eclectic acts like Bambie Thug to established names such as Atreyu, Airbourne, and Black Label Society, Spinefarm’s roster showcases a diverse array of talents curated for long-term artistic growth rather than immediate commercial gains.
In a recent interview at the Louder Than Life festival, Jonas reflects on his extensive career and delves into significant topics like A&R, artist development, and the evolving role of record labels in 2025. Emphasizing the importance of cultivating connections between music makers and listeners, Jonas underscores the challenges of navigating a crowded media landscape but remains optimistic about the power of music to forge lasting bonds between artists and fans.
Jonas’s journey from a humble distribution warehouse in Queens to spearheading Spinefarm’s global expansion exemplifies the enduring impact of his dedication and passion for music. With an unwavering commitment to fostering artistic excellence and nurturing emerging talents, Jonas Nachsin continues to shape the future of rock and metal music for generations to come.
