Footage captures furious parent punching referee, causing unconsciousness following basketball game
A recent incident at a high school basketball game in Honolulu has left the community shocked and concerned about escalating violence towards officials and administrators. Video footage released shows parents becoming increasingly agitated and verbally abusive towards referees before a physical altercation took place where Moanalua High School’s assistant athletic director, Natalie Iwamoto, was punched and knocked unconscious.
The altercation occurred on December 4th during a game where Moanalua High School lost to Mililani. The footage captures the couple, Aukusitino Noga Jr. and his wife, Jamilee Noga, yelling at referees using expletives and racial slurs. The video shows Jamilee Noga saying, “You better wake up, ref,” followed by Aukusitino Noga Jr. calling the referee a “white ref” and telling them they suck.
Alton Mamiya, the commissioner of the Hawaii State Basketball Officials Association and a friend of Iwamoto, expressed his concern over the incident, stating that behavior at games has worsened over the years, but he has never witnessed such violence involving administrators or officials. Mamiya mentioned that during the game, the couple’s son had fouled out, leading to their dissatisfaction with the officiating. However, the situation seemed to calm down until the altercation occurred while Iwamoto was escorting the parents from the game.
Following the incident, Iwamoto filed temporary restraining orders against Aukusitino Noga Jr. and Jamilee Noga. Aukusitino Noga Jr., an adult corrections officer, is facing charges of assault and battery for the incident, pleading not guilty and awaiting a trial in February. The Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation also released a statement, indicating that they are investigating the situation involving Aukusitino Noga Jr.
The incident has sparked concern among parents who attend sporting events, highlighting the growing aggression and anger displayed by some attendees. People expressing their fears about safety and the potential for future games to be disrupted by violent behavior. It is a troubling trend that is being observed not just in Hawaii but across the country, where instances of violence at sporting events seem to be on the rise.
The community is still reeling from the shocking incident, and while Iwamoto is said to be physically okay, the emotional impact of the assault lingers. As investigations and legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and civility of sporting events, emphasizing the need for respect and appropriate behavior towards officials and administrators. Such incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and the consequences of allowing emotions to escalate into violence.
