Being a Black artist in predominantly white spaces can present unique challenges and opportunities. In the inaugural episode of the REVERB series by GANGGANG, Chicago blues guitarist Nathan Graham shares insights into his experience in the music industry. This six-part video series, created in collaboration with Mirror Indy, highlights Black artists from Indiana and the Midwest, combining interviews with original performances and homages to Black music icons.

I Made Rock N Roll, the brainchild of GANGGANG, spearheads this initiative to recognize the significant contributions of Black musicians to the history of rock ‘n’ roll. The project originated with a festival in May 2024 at the American Legion Mall and has since evolved into a comprehensive educational program. REVERB’s first three sessions took place at the White Rabbit Cabaret in Fountain Square, setting the stage for authentic conversations with talented artists like Nathan Graham.

In one intimate exchange, Graham delves into his musical influences and the importance of feeling acknowledged in his craft. The series offers a platform for artists to share their stories and showcase their talents while embracing their cultural heritage. A shoutout is extended to Naptown Thrift and Zodiac Vintage for providing the stylish wardrobe that enhances the artists’ presentation.

Upcoming episodes of REVERB promise more engaging interviews with notable musicians from Indianapolis. D’yshe, a multifaceted singer and actor, and Rei Francel, the lead vocalist of The Palace, a genre-blending band specializing in funk, soul, and rock, are set to grace the screen in early 2026. These conversations aim to shed light on the diversity and richness of the local music scene, amplifying the voices of underrepresented artists.

Mirror Indy, a nonprofit newsroom committed to showcasing community-driven stories, relies on donations and grants to sustain its operations. Ariana Beedie, the community journalism director at Mirror Indy, spearheads initiatives like REVERB to foster connections within the arts and culture community. Her work reflects the organization’s dedication to providing a platform for authentic storytelling and diverse perspectives.

By supporting Mirror Indy’s endeavors, readers and patrons play a pivotal role in nurturing a vibrant arts scene and amplifying marginalized voices. Through collective contributions, the nonprofit newsroom can continue its mission of informing, engaging, and inspiring the community. All donations are currently being matched through December 31st, offering a unique opportunity to double the impact of charitable giving and extend support to local artists and creatives.

As we navigate the complexities of cultural representation and artistic expression, projects like REVERB serve as catalysts for meaningful dialogue and creative exploration. The series not only celebrates the artistic prowess of Black musicians but also provokes discussions on inclusion, identity, and representation within the music industry. Join the conversation and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of REVERB, where music transcends boundaries and narratives converge to create a harmonious tapestry of diverse voices and experiences.
