White Lion, a rock band from New York, reached the peak of their success in the summer of 1988. Their album, “Pride,” had sold a million copies, and they were touring with AC/DC in the US. The band, fronted by Danish singer Mike Tramp, had a whirlwind 10-month tour and opened for Kiss and Aerosmith. Gene Simmons from Kiss had complimented Tramp on having “the coolest name in rock ‘n’ roll,” and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith sang the band’s breakthrough hit, “Wait,” every night. “Wait” reached number 8 on the US chart, followed by an even bigger hit, “When The Children Cry,” which reached number three.
Tramp reflected on their rise to fame, comparing it to “climbing a ladder with a rocket up your ass.” Despite their initial success, White Lion faced a rapid decline due to several factors. Tramp and Bratta first met in 1982 in New York City when Tramp’s band, Lion, supported Bratta’s group, Dreamer, at a rock club in Brooklyn. Tramp was impressed by Bratta’s guitar skills, recalling the moment he watched him flawlessly play Eddie Van Halen’s iconic guitar piece, “Eruption.” Tramp, who had already been in the music industry since he was 13, was amazed by Bratta’s talent. Tramp had joined a Danish band called Mabel at 15, participating in the Eurovision Song Contest with them.
The disbandment of White Lion was a consequence of their internal dynamics, combined with external influences such as changing music trends. The band’s rapid rise and fall demonstrated the volatile nature of the music industry, where success could be followed by a sudden decline.
