Playing For Change commemorates the 60th anniversary of The Doors with an exciting global tribute, set to premiere on January 9, 2026. The tribute features a new rendition of the iconic song “Riders On The Storm” and unites surviving Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger, paying homage to the late Ray Manzarek and incorporating Jim Morrison’s recorded vocals.

This project not only celebrates The Doors’ enduring legacy but also aligns with Playing For Change’s goal of uniting communities through music. “Riders On The Storm,” originally released in 1971 on The Doors’ album “L.A. Woman,” stands out as one of the band’s most atmospheric and influential tracks, capturing their creative depth during the later stages of their career.

The global reimagining of this classic song brings together over 20 musicians and dancers from eight countries, including Lukas Nelson, Micah Nelson, Sierra Ferrell, Rami Jaffee of Foo Fighters, and producer and bassist Don Was. By blending rock, folk, Indigenous rhythms, and regional musical traditions, the performance creates a rich and diverse musical tapestry.

John Densmore praised the project for its respectful yet forward-thinking approach. He commended Lukas Nelson for stepping into Morrison’s vocal space with confidence and Rami Jaffee for capturing Manzarek’s distinctive keyboard style. The visually and musically cohesive presentation was credited to Playing For Change co-founder Mark Johnson.

Robby Krieger highlighted the seamless continuity that characterizes Doors-related projects post-Morrison. He emphasized the organic chemistry that he and Densmore maintain musically, noting how Doors songs continue to attract top-tier musicians from around the world.

The collaboration opens with the Lakota Drum Group, infusing the song with Indigenous rhythm and significance. This decision underscores the project’s social commitment, supporting the Wicahpi Olowan Music Program, which focuses on Indigenous youth and communities in partnership with the First Peoples Fund. Proceeds from exclusive “Riders On The Storm” Song Around The World merchandise will directly benefit the program.

Mark Johnson emphasized the power of music to transcend borders and unite people in ways that other mediums cannot. This core philosophy has guided Playing For Change since its inception, producing collaborative global works known as Songs Around The World that showcase musicians in their authentic environments.

With a history of over 400 videos and collaborations with renowned artists like Ringo Starr, Bono, and Keith Richards, Playing For Change has made a significant cultural impact. The new collaboration on “Riders On The Storm” follows a successful theatrical debut in December 2025, aligning with the re-release of the Grammy Award-winning documentary “When You’re Strange,” narrated by Johnny Depp.

The enduring influence of The Doors is undeniable, with their fusion of blues, jazz, poetry, and rock challenging conventions and embodying the countercultural spirit of the late 1960s. Songs like “Light My Fire,” “Break On Through (To The Other Side),” and “Riders On The Storm” have solidified the band’s place in music history, selling over 100 million records worldwide.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, The Doors have received numerous accolades and continue to resonate with new audiences. The global tribute by Playing For Change serves as a poignant reminder of the band’s timeless music, transcending borders and connecting with listeners across generations.
