Iconic Surf Ballroom Experience Center Continues to Thrive
Not Fade Away is a cutting-edge interactive program housed in the Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center, a state-of-the-art facility adjacent to the historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The Surf Ballroom holds significant historical importance as the venue where Buddy Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and Ritchie Valens performed their final concert in 1959 before a tragic plane crash claimed their lives and shook the foundation of rock ‘n’ roll. Positioned as the singular immersive experience nationwide dedicated to a live rock ‘n’ roll landmark, our initiative salutes the musicians and audiences instrumental in shaping the enduring heritage of the Surf.
This immersive 40-minute encounter unfolds through a series of distinct segments, each peeling back layers of the Surf Ballroom’s intricate narrative. The first chapter features a linear film that intertwines the narratives of the Surf Ballroom, the small farming community of Clear Lake, and the evolution of American music. Utilizing projections on the primary curved wall, the adjacent walls, and the floor, accompanied by enveloping surround sound audio, we narrate compelling tales of vibrant nights spent dancing, the genesis of rock ‘n’ roll, the metamorphosis of the Surf Ballroom and American culture, and the unwavering support of Clear Lake’s residents in safeguarding the Surf’s legacy.
At pivotal junctures within the film, the entire space converges to captivate visitors. Post the original Surf Ballroom’s destruction in 1945, the refurbished Surf, resembling a tropical beach club, springs to life by animating murals adorning the venue’s walls (depicting a beach scenario) and projecting simulated water and waves to “wash” over visitors’ feet. During the era of rock ‘n’ roll’s ascendancy, dance club lights illuminate the floor amidst archival footage showcasing teenagers dancing in the 1950s.
Upon the film’s conclusion, a metamorphosis takes place within the space. The primary curved wall transforms into an interactive marvel, brimming with dynamic digital gateways that offer in-depth explorations of a plethora of topics linked to the Surf and American music – spanning the Outlaw Country movement, Chicano Rock, the Bo Diddley rhythm, the history of rockabilly, love stories of individuals who found love at the Surf, and more. Launching with 130 narratives, the program continually augments its library through a content management system. Both music aficionados and novices can uncover new discoveries as they interact with these gateways through gestures along the wall.
Moreover, the floor too adopts an interactive dimension, with musical notes and assorted patterns responding to visitors’ steps as they navigate through the space. Younger visitors especially relish the opportunity to dash around, triggering responses from the floor patterns through their movements.
