Department of Homeland Security addresses Billie Eilish’s comments on ICE as a “terrorist group”
In the wake of a tragic incident where a 37-year-old US citizen named Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, MN, musicians have expressed their outrage towards ICE. Billie Eilish took to her Instagram Story to denounce ICE as a “federally funded and supported terrorist group” that is causing harm to families, citizens, and now, taking innocent lives. The response from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been to defend the agent’s actions.
DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin, in a statement to Billboard, emphasized that the released footage supported their claims that the individual shot by the officer, Jonathan Ross, was posing a threat by attempting to use her vehicle as a weapon against law enforcement. McLaughlin asserts that Ross acted in self-defense as he feared for his life and the lives of his colleagues. The DHS encourages the public to view the video and draw their own conclusions. The footage captures Good stating calmly that she was not angry and that everything was okay before being shot, followed by derogatory remarks from a bystander.
McLaughlin addressed the accusations against ICE, stating that the agency does not separate families. Parents are given the option to be deported with their children or have their children placed in the care of a designated guardian. This approach aligns with previous administrations’ policies on immigration enforcement. McLaughlin criticized the rhetoric from critics like Billie Eilish, attributing a significant increase in assaults and vehicle rammings against law enforcement to such rhetoric.
President Donald Trump labeled Good’s actions as horrible, claiming that she ran over an officer intentionally. Musicians like Neil Young and Dave Matthews also voiced their disapproval of ICE’s actions. Young highlighted his opposition to funding ICE, referring to them as “masked thugs wandering our streets” causing fear and division within communities. Matthews expressed disbelief and distress over the incident, emphasizing the need to care for one another, house the homeless, and prevent unnecessary violence.
The musicians are adamant about their stance against ICE’s operations and the need for transparency and accountability from law enforcement agencies. The tragic death of Renee Nicole Good has sparked a conversation on police conduct, use of force, and the treatment of individuals by immigration authorities. By shedding light on such incidents, artists hope to bring about positive change and demand justice for victims of violence and injustice.
