Improvement projects progressing at Mill Creek Metroparks
Mill Creek Metroparks is embarking on a series of capital improvement projects aimed at enhancing the park’s operations and overall quality. With a focus on economic development, these projects encompass various areas such as infrastructure upgrades and new constructions. One of the major projects set to take place this year is the renovation of East Glacier Drive and the Slippery Rock bridge, which has received 80 percent of its funding from a federal grant.
According to Justin Rogers, the director of planning and operations at Mill Creek Metroparks, the primary goal of these projects is to enhance the park’s efficiency and safety. The scope of work includes addressing the infrastructure of the bridge, such as the abutments, piers, decks, sidewalks, and railing, to make it more accessible and secure for visitors. The park’s board has approved the 2026 capital improvement project, which aims to expand the park’s offerings with new facilities.
One of the exciting developments is the construction of a new service center and children’s garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Spanning almost an acre, the children’s garden will provide a hands-on experience for kids to explore horticulture and vegetable garden areas, fostering an appreciation for nature. Additionally, a new lodge at Vickers Nature Preserve is in the works, designed to accommodate private rentals for equestrian programs and events, as well as educational programs organized by the metroparks.
The budget for these improvements is substantial, with over $1.3 million allocated for Fellows Riverside Garden enhancements, including irrigation and signage upgrades, as well as improvements to the cafe interior. Other areas slated for improvement include Collier Preserve, Lanterman’s Mill, and Vicker’s Lodge, with specific budgets allotted for habitat enhancements and infrastructure upgrades.
Rogers emphasized the timeline for completing these projects, aiming for all capital improvements to be wrapped up by the end of the year, ideally before the start of fall. With a focus on enhancing visitor experiences, ensuring safety, and boosting operational efficiency, the capital improvement projects at Mill Creek Metroparks are set to transform the park into a premier destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
