The band collaborated with Alison Brown, an accomplished banjo player who also produced the album.

In an interview with Goldmine, Celia Woodsmith shared insights on five songs from the album. The opening track, “Magic Accident,” sets the energetic tone with vibrant harmonies and upbeat banjo tunes. Woodsmith reflected on her musical journey, recounting her struggles in the rock music scene before finding her place in Della Mae. She described serendipitous moments in life as “magic accidents,” emphasizing the band’s collective journey and musical fulfillment.

The track “My Own Highway” explores themes of personal fulfillment and defying societal expectations. Woodsmith, along with fellow musicians, penned this song as a testament to their unconventional career paths. Despite societal pressures to conform, the band embraces their unique journey, showcasing strength, resilience, and creativity in their musical pursuit.

“Out Run ‘Em,” a collaborative effort by Avril Smith and Caroline Spencer, carries forward the theme of forging one’s path. With motivational lyrics inspired by long-distance running, the song encourages listeners to break away from the crowd and pursue their dreams. The inclusion of drums by Jamie Dick adds dynamism to the track, reflecting the band’s spirit of independence and self-expression.

The album features a composition by renowned songwriter Bruce Robison titled “Lifeline,” which echoes the iconic harmonies reminiscent of The Chicks. Woodsmith praised the band’s vocal arrangements and nuanced harmonies, highlighting the collective talent of Della Mae. The addition of accordion by Jen Gunderman contributes to the track’s rich musical tapestry, showcasing the band’s versatile sound.

Closing with “What You’re Looking For,” the album delivers a poignant message of compassion and empathy. Woodsmith draws parallels to the timeless country sound of Patsy Cline, emphasizing the importance of connection and understanding in society. The band’s harmonies evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing, urging listeners to preserve their inner peace amidst the chaos of the world.

Through their album “Magic Accident,” Della Mae showcases a blend of traditional country sounds, heartfelt lyrics, and powerful harmonies. With each track, the band celebrates individuality, resilience, and the pursuit of one’s path. Their music serves as a reminder to embrace life’s “magic accidents” and cherish the journey, no matter how unconventional it may seem.
