Man killed by immigration officers in Minneapolis
A tragic incident occurred in south Minneapolis involving a man named Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and Minneapolis native who lost his life after being shot by federal immigration officers. This unfortunate event marked the third shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis in one month.
United States Senator Tina Smith expressed her grave concerns about the incident, emphasizing the brutal outcome of the federal agents’ actions. Eyewitness video footage revealed the disturbing nature of this encounter, leading to swift condemnation from Minnesota officials. After the shocking death of Pretti in the targeted operation conducted by federal law enforcement, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced his intention to place a temporary restraining order to halt the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
The fatal incident unfolded at a targeted operation in the city’s South Side as Department of Homeland Security agents were pursuing an individual believed to be undocumented and wanted for violent assault. Gregory Bovino, head of U.S. Border Patrol, described the terrible event where Pretti approached Border Patrol agents with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, leading to a tragic confrontation. Bovino highlighted that the federal agents attempted to disarm Pretti, yet he violently resisted, forcing one agent to use lethal force in self-defense. The Homeland Security Department shared on social media that Pretti’s behavior seemed to intend significant harm to law enforcement officers.
Despite the official account of the incident, footage from bystanders contradicted the DHS’ version of events. This video displayed multiple agents surrounding Pretti, striking him, and attempting to restrain him before the fatal shot was fired. The video raised questions about the sequence of events leading up to the tragic outcome. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara clarified that Pretti had minimal contact with law enforcement prior to this incident, indicating that Pretti had a legal permit to carry the weapon he had on him.
Tragically, Pretti sustained multiple gunshot wounds from possibly more than one federal officer, leading to his tragic demise at Hennepin County Medical Center. Police authorities did not provide any details explaining the circumstances surrounding this fatal encounter. Bovino highlighted that the experienced officer involved in the shooting remains under thorough investigation due to the complexity of the incident. It remains unclear if Pretti posed an imminent threat to the agents, as it has sparked calls for a detailed and transparent investigation to determine the correctness of the officers’ actions.
