Exiles, a band hailing from Melbourne, showcases a gritty fusion of post-punk vigor and rock ‘n’ roll attitude in their music. Their electrifying live performances translate seamlessly into their tracks, capturing the raw and unbridled energy that defines their sound. Drawing inspiration from acts like The Hives, Les Savy Fav, and Fontaines DC, the Exiles’ latest single, “Static,” stands out as a high-octane rock anthem that rivals the likes of The Strokes and The Clash with their distinctive swagger.

Lead guitarist and vocalist Tony Clay, reflecting on his upbringing in the small coastal town of Forster / Tuncurry in New South Wales, credits his family’s love for music as the foundation for his passion. Influenced early on by bands like KISS, AC/DC, and The Blues Brothers, Clay’s musical journey began with singing in the school choir at seven and teaching himself guitar at twelve.

The formation of Exiles stemmed from Clay’s collaboration with Josh during the lockdowns in 2020 while working on the project VINNY. Transitioning back to a garage and indie rock sound, the duo embarked on a new musical direction, leading to the birth of the band. Drawing from a diverse range of influences such as The Strokes, Interpol, and Arctic Monkeys, Exiles’ songwriting process predominantly involves Clay and Josh sharing demos and riffs before finalizing compositions with the rest of the band.

The band’s discography features singles like “Fade Away” and “Friday Night,” released through Bread And Butter Records, leading up to their debut album, “Waiting For Romance.” Each release has garnered positive reactions from fans, with a growing fanbase and larger shows with every new single. While primarily focused on the Australian music scene with tours along the east coast, Exiles aims to venture abroad in the near future.

The band’s latest single, “Static,” produced at The Aviary Studios with Alex Markwell, showcases their evolving sound and pays homage to their influences like The Strokes. With plans for more singles leading up to a new album, Exiles is set on delivering captivating music and engaging performances. Their single launch concert for “Static” at The Gem Bar in Collingwood marks a significant milestone for the band, hinting at upcoming tours outside Australia, including potential dates in the UK.

Looking ahead, Exiles envisions a future filled with promising opportunities and impactful music. As they continue to craft their sound and expand their reach, the band remains dedicated to their ethos of delivering high-energy, authentic rock and roll. And on Tony Clay’s turntable at the moment? The Last Shadow Puppets’ “Everything You’ve Come To Expect.”
