Kneecap, the Northern Irish rap group, has faced a series of challenges and controversies since their debut album, Fine Art, in 2024. They have been vocal advocates for Palestine in light of the atrocities in Gaza, which created backlash following their performance at Coachella. This backlash included a smear campaign, resulting in the trio parting ways with their booking agency, Sharon Osbourne calling for the revocation of their visas, and the cancellation of several concerts. Additionally, an old concert clip led to a terror charge against Mo Chara, although it was later dismissed. These trials ultimately led to the cancellation of their sold-out US tour. Canada also deemed them “ineligible to enter our country,” prompting a lawsuit against a Canadian legislator. Despite these challenges, Kneecap is forging ahead with their upcoming album release.

Their new album, FENIAN, is set to be released in April, with the lead single, “Liars Tale,” already out. The song serves as a critique of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with Kneecap denouncing him as a “scumbag” in their statement. The accompanying music video, directed by Thomas James, aims to reflect the chaotic state of the world, embodying a sense of punk, absurdity, abrasiveness, and wildness. Described as a “carnival of distraction,” the video integrates various ideas in a three-minute display of Irish mythology, satire, and anger. The band’s fire and dedication to helping others shine through in the video, which serves as a defiant statement against those in power.

Looking ahead to the release of FENIAN, Kneecap members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí expressed their determination to push back against attempts to silence them. The album, produced by Dan Carey, promises a more sinister sound to match the challenging times, while also conveying a sense of defiance and triumph. The title, inspired by Irish folklore warriors and later used as a derogatory term for the Irish, now symbolizes those who speak truth to power in the face of oppression. Just as the Irish language persevered through 800 years of colonization, Kneecap remains resolute in their commitment to their message.

With the upcoming release of FENIAN and a series of tour dates lined up, including appearances at festivals across Europe, Kneecap is gearing up to make a powerful statement with their music. The album is set to drop on April 24th through Heavenly Recordings. Stay tuned for what promises to be a bold and impactful musical experience from this unapologetically outspoken rap group.
