The Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, winners of two Grammy Awards, are known for their unique and boundary-pushing approach to traditional mariachi music. Led by Cindy Shea, who has a background in jazz and classical trumpet, the group infuses their sound with diverse influences, creating a blend of styles that sets them apart from traditional mariachi bands.

Shea, who studied under Latin jazz legend Arturo Sandoval, brings a fresh perspective to mariachi music, incorporating elements of jazz and pop into their repertoire. With a multiethnic lineup of all-female musicians, the Mariachi Divas have redefined what it means to be a mariachi band, breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes in the process.

Their album, “Dulce Daño,” showcases their versatility, with covers of songs like Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man” and a Spanish-language version of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Mixing traditional mariachi standards with unexpected choices like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson tributes, the Mariachi Divas create a dynamic and engaging musical experience for their audience.

In their latest release, “Pure 80s,” the Mariachi Divas put a mariachi twist on classic hits from the 1980s, including renditions of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Embracing their love for the music of that era, Shea and the Divas showcase their ability to adapt their signature sound to a wide range of musical styles and genres.

Despite facing challenges as a woman in a male-dominated genre, Shea has continued to push boundaries with the Mariachi Divas, releasing over 20 albums, winning two Grammy Awards, and earning multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations. The band’s innovative blend of ranchera and merengue, known as “ranchengue,” has further established their reputation as trailblazers in the world of mariachi music.

One of their most notable collaborations was with U2, where they appeared in a music video for the band’s song “Song for Someone.” Despite logistical challenges, including a last-minute change of location to Shea’s house, the collaboration with U2 was a memorable experience for the Mariachi Divas, showcasing their versatility and adaptability as musicians.

With a performance scheduled at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater, the Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea continue to captivate audiences with their innovative approach to mariachi music. Incorporating elements from a diverse range of musical styles and genres, the group’s commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging expectations has solidified their reputation as one of the most exciting and dynamic mariachi bands performing today.
