Former member of The Boo Radleys, Martin Carr, has recently announced the release of his new album, What Future, set to debut later this year via Sonny Boy Records, his own label. While not all the album details are available at this time, Carr has treated fans to a first listen with the track “Connie Converse is Playing at My House,” a song that pays homage to the relatively obscure singer-songwriter from the 1950s while also nodding to modern influences like LCD Soundsystem.

Carr explains that his inspiration for the song came from a true crime podcast recounting the story of Connie Converse, a talented artist who self-recorded innovative music in the late ’50s before mysteriously disappearing in the ’70s. This narrative resonated deeply with Carr, who shares a similar sense of yearning in his own personal and self-reflective lyrics. In an attempt to learn more about Converse, Carr delved into Howard Fishman’s book, “To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse,” leading to an obsession that culminated in a dream where Converse was performing in his kitchen on a vintage Moog synthesizer, creating beautiful and otherworldly sounds.

Not limited to just the musical tribute, Carr also created a video to accompany the track, further showcasing his multi-faceted talents as an artist. The video, much like the song itself, offers a blend of historical admiration for Converse’s work and a modern, innovative twist that mirrors the contemporary music scene. This fusion of past and present highlights Carr’s ability to draw inspiration from a diverse range of sources while crafting a unique and compelling sound that is all his own.

As the release of What Future draws closer, fans of The Boo Radleys and Martin Carr eagerly anticipate the full album’s unveiling, eager to experience the depth and creativity that Carr brings to his music. With “Connie Converse is Playing at My House” serving as a tantalizing preview, it’s clear that Carr’s upcoming album will be a rich tapestry of influences, emotions, and sonic landscapes that showcase his evolution as an artist and his enduring commitment to pushing musical boundaries.
