Yumi Zouma, the alt-pop band hailing from Christchurch, operates in a unique manner that sets them apart from traditional bands. With members spread out across different countries such as New Zealand, New York, and London, the band conducts their work remotely, navigating time zones and diverse settings. Despite the challenges of distance, the band members come together over Zoom to celebrate milestones, with each participant enjoying their own cake or bubbles.

Reflecting on their latest album, “No Love Lost to Kindness,” the band found a new sense of unity and collaboration. Unlike their previous records, which were mostly created remotely, this album stemmed from in-person sessions during a break in their North American and European tour. Taking advantage of a blank slate in Mexico, the band embraced spontaneity, humor, and shared experiences as they crafted new music.

Yumi Zouma’s distinct sound, characterized by dreamy ’70s-inspired pop elements, also pays homage to New Zealand’s rock legacy. Drawing inspiration from bands like Shihad, Fur Patrol, Stellar, and Tadpole, the band explores a mix of influences that shape their music. Member Charlie Ryder noted that fellow bandmate Christie Simpson’s channeling of Courtney Love’s energy added a unique dimension to the album, culminating in tracks like “Drag,” which delves into personal experiences and emotions.

The band’s willingness to experiment and incorporate random ideas shines through in their album, with quirky elements like a Nokia ringtone and Burgess playing the harmonica adding a touch of playfulness. Despite initial doubts from some fans about the evolution of their sound, Yumi Zouma’s ability to balance rock influences with their signature pop style creates a dynamic listening experience that captures a range of emotions and styles.

Even the decision-making process for the album’s title was marked by lightheartedness and creativity, with concepts like ‘Tunnel to Hell’ amusingly considered and discarded. Embracing spontaneity and defying expectations, the band showcases a willingness to push boundaries and explore new avenues in their music.

Looking ahead to their upcoming tours, Yumi Zouma plans to incorporate train travel through Europe, adding a touch of romance and intrigue to their journey. The band’s commitment to creating shared experiences while traversing different landscapes reflects their dedication to crafting music that resonates with audiences worldwide. As they prepare to bring their latest material to stages around the world, Yumi Zouma remains grounded in their collaborative spirit and commitment to evolving their sound.
