Check out Down’s Funk-Metal Cover of Dr. John’s “Right Place, Wrong Time”
Iconic supergroup Down has returned with a special cover of Dr. John’s famous track, “Right Place, Wrong Time.” The band’s rendition comes just in time for Mardi Gras celebrations, paying homage to the legendary New Orleans artist and his music that blended various genres like blues, jazz, R&B, soul, and funk. Dr. John originally released the song as the lead single from his 1973 album, “In the Right Place,” which remains one of his most popular songs, featured in a variety of movies and TV shows over the years.
Down’s cover of “Right Place, Wrong Time” was accompanied by a music video, shot by Mike Holderbeast in March. The video captures the essence of the festive Mardi Gras season and honors Dr. John’s appearances on “The Midnight Special” TV series from 1972 to 1981. Frontman Philip H. Anselmo shared his personal connection to the track, expressing his lifelong admiration for Dr. John’s music, which was prevalent while growing up in New Orleans. Anselmo revealed that recording the song was a long-time dream of his, fulfilled with the band Down, and even featured his mother in the video, showcasing his deep-rooted appreciation for Dr. John’s musical legacy.
The band Down is unmistakable in its sound, featuring Anselmo on vocals, Pepper Keenan, and Kirk Windstein on guitars, Jimmy Bower on drums, and Pat Bruders on bass. Their music is characterized by massive riffs, blues leads, powerful drums, and haunting vocals that set them apart in the heavy metal scene. With a background in bands like Pantera, Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, and EyeHateGod, the members of Down came together in 1995 to craft their debut album, “NOLA,” a platinum-selling classic that marked the beginning of their musical journey.
Since then, Down has released several critically acclaimed albums, including “Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow,” “Down III: Over The Under,” “Down IV – Part One,” and “Down IV – Part Two,” each contributing to their musical evolution and fan following. The band’s live performances have solidified their reputation, sharing the stage with iconic acts like Metallica and Heaven & Hell and gracing renowned festivals like Download and Ozzfest. Down’s music resonates with fans on a deep level, evoking a passion for heavy music that reverberates in the soul.
For fans eagerly anticipating Down’s return to the stage, the band has announced a series of live shows for 2026, including appearances at the Sweden Rock Festival, Mystic Fest Poland, Hellfest, Aftershock, and Sick New World Texas.
