Nigerian rock artist encourages people to take a moment to feel loved in busy Lagos
Valentine’s Day is not always at the forefront of people’s minds in Lagos, a bustling Nigerian city with a population exceeding 20 million. Known for its vibrant energy and commercial activity, Lagos can sometimes overshadow the celebration of love on this special day.
One individual, Bianca Okorocha, also known as “Clayrocksu,” is determined to change this narrative. A rock musician based in Lagos, Okorocha has taken her music to the streets of the city in honor of Valentine’s Day. Serenading random commuters with heartfelt love songs and presenting them with single-stem roses, Okorocha aims to spread joy and love in a time when bad news seems to dominate the headlines.
Speaking about her initiative, Okorocha expressed, “I am a musician, and we just thought it was a special and nice thing to do for people. Especially in this time and climate where everything is kind of difficult and all you hear on the news is bad news.” Her melodious tunes, accompanied by the strums of her guitar, create a heartwarming atmosphere, evoking smiles from those she encounters on the bustling streets of Lagos.
This gesture takes on greater significance against the backdrop of Nigeria’s current challenges. Since President Bola Tinubu came into power in 2023, the nation has undergone significant economic reforms, including the removal of a long-standing fuel subsidy. While these changes were intended to cut costs and attract investment, they have exacerbated Nigeria’s cost of living crisis, affecting millions across the country.
In addition to economic hardships, Nigeria has also been grappling with a severe security crisis, particularly in conflict-ridden regions in the north. These challenges have resulted in a surge in commodity prices, further impacting cities like Lagos. Despite these adversities, individuals like Okorocha are determined to brighten people’s days and inject some positivity into their lives during this season of love.
Barbara Lulu, a Lagos resident who was surprised by Okorocha’s impromptu performance, shared her reaction, saying, “First off, this was a very shocking moment for me, because I never expected it. It just kind of happened, and all I can say is yay!” This spontaneous act of kindness brought a moment of respite to Lulu’s stressful day, highlighting the power of music and love in uplifting spirits.
Contrary to the conventional perception of Valentine’s Day as a celebration exclusively for romantic partners, Okorocha believes in spreading love to everyone. She noted, “People think that Valentine’s Day is only about romantic gestures, only boyfriend and girlfriend, husband and wife. But Valentine is really just about sharing love.” By extending roses and singing love songs to strangers, Okorocha aims to redefine the essence of Valentine’s Day and foster a sense of community and togetherness in Lagos.
In a city where daily life can be demanding and chaotic, Okorocha’s heartfelt initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of love and kindness in navigating challenging times. As she continues to serenade commuters and share her musical talents on the streets of Lagos, Okorocha’s mission to spread love and joy resonates with many, offering a glimmer of hope and positivity in the midst of adversity.
