Punky Meadows, the iconic guitarist of Angel, delves into the auditions with Kiss from a time that could have changed his career had he said yes. When founding Kiss member, Ace Frehley, announced his departure in 1982, Kiss launched a search for his replacement. The band scouted renowned guitarists like Slash and Richie Sambora but ultimately decided on Vinnie Vincent. However, Punky Meadows was also considered for the role but has since shared how he unintentionally turned down the opportunity.

Angel had disbanded, and Meadows, along with the band’s keyboardist Gregg Giuffria, had formed a new band called Legend. Barry Levine, the photographer behind Angel and Kiss’s visual aesthetics, informed Meadows about the vacancy in Kiss and spearheaded the connection with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from Kiss. As Meadows recalls, “He called me up and said, ‘Listen, Punky, Kiss is looking for a guitar player. Ace is gone.’ He expressed that Simmons was keen on Meadows filling the void in the band.

A meeting was set up where Meadows was asked to learn one side of Kiss’s “Alive!” album and attend a jam session with the band. Meadows shared his experience of walking into the rehearsal space and seamlessly connecting with Simmons, Stanley, and Eric Carr as they jammed to Led Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown.” The chemistry was undeniable, and Kiss enthusiastically offered Meadows the spot as the new guitarist. However, Meadows hesitated as Legend was in the process of securing a record deal.

Meadows’ contemplation concerning the band’s future negotiations led to a pivotal moment where he told Simmons that he needed to discuss it with his bandmate, which ultimately caused him to lose the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As Meadows described it, “As soon as I said that, Gene got up and said, ‘Come on, Paul. Let’s go.’ They stormed outta there, and just left me standing there.” This decision marked the beginning of a chapter where Kiss would take a different path without Meadows.

Reflecting on his choice, Meadows acknowledges that his decision had significant repercussions on his career trajectory. The guitarist who accidentally turned down Kiss shines a light on the butterfly effect a single decision can have on one’s life. Despite the missed opportunity with Kiss, Meadows continued crafting his music, leaving an indelible mark through his work with Angel and other ventures. The poignant tale of Meadows’ choice to prioritize loyalty to his band and their shared vision offers a vivid behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of rock royalty and the unforeseen twists that shape music history.
