U2’s New EP “Days of Ash” Features Ed Sheeran and Taras Topolia
Irish rock band U2, known for being one of the most iconic bands in rock ‘n’ roll history, has recently surprised fans with a new EP titled Days Of Ash. This release comes after an eight-year gap since their last album of new music, Songs Of Experience. Despite the long hiatus, U2 has actively engaged in various projects to uphold their musical legacy. These endeavors include the opening of the Sphere, a memoir by Bono, acceptance of a Presidential Medal Of Freedom, and the re-recording of 40 songs for the 2023 compilation Songs Of Surrender.
Days Of Ash comprises six tracks that are unmistakably U2 in style and essence. Similarly, “Song Of The Future” pays homage to Sarina Esmailzadeh, a 16-year-old Iranian girl who met a tragic end during a protest in 2022. “One Life At A Time” is said to be inspired by Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist murdered by an Israeli West Bank settler after contributing to the documentary No Other Land.
Collaborating with Ed Sheeran and Taras Topolia of the band Antytila, U2 delivers “Yours Eternally.” The EP also features the classic Edge ringing-guitar sound in the ballad “The Tears Of Things.” “Wildpeace” sees U2 and producer Jacknife Lee teaming up with Nigerian artist Adeola for a powerful rendition of a poem by the late Israeli writer Yehuda Amichai, showcasing the band’s diverse influences.
In addition to the EP, U2 has resurrected Propaganda, the zine launched in 1986, with a new digital issue and limited print run at select record stores. Bono, reflecting on the EP, highlights the different tones and themes present in Days Of Ash compared to their upcoming album. He emphasizes the urgency and significance of the EP’s messages of defiance, dismay, and celebration in the face of turbulent times.
