Let the rain cleanse the emotions, for Hilary Duff is laying bare the inspiration behind her latest song. Amid fan speculation that her new track “We Don’t Talk” delves into the supposed tension between her and her older sister Haylie Duff, the singer acknowledged the buzz surrounding the yet-to-be-officially-released tune doesn’t catch her off guard.

“I was sort of expecting it,” Hilary confessed in a Rolling Stone interview published on February 19. “I made a conscious decision to include that song on my album. It’s certainly the most isolating part of my life, and I grappled with the question of whether I should share this.”

Ultimately, she concluded that if people already believed they knew her story, she might as well be the one to narrate it. “People have been a part of my life since I was a kid, and so they are acquainted with all the players in it, and they understand what I am referring to,” she elaborated. “For me, it was crucial to be transparent about that particular theme. It truly came from a place of authenticity.”

E! News has made efforts to contact representatives for Haylie for their feedback.

In her forthcoming album luck…or something, slated for release on February 20, Hilary sings about a divide she experiences with someone even though they “come from the same home, same blood.” While she didn’t expressly dissuade fans from believing the song was based on her sister, she maintained that the hypothesis one of her stage props—a small yellow coach—is a deliberate reference aimed at her sister is baseless.

“Absolutely untrue and absurd,” she clarified. “And I don’t have the luxury of time to craft hidden signs for people to decipher about that. I have a vibrant life and a bustling family, and this song was simply about my reality, and that’s all there is to it.”

As she immerses herself back into her pop music career, Hilary has been candid about the challenges she has faced since her last album dropped in 2015, shedding light on her relationship with her family, including father Robert Duff and mother Susan Duff.

“I’ve had a very complex life, and my parents had a very complex situation,” Hilary shared with Glamour in an interview released on February 17, alluding to their tumultuous divorce in 2008. “I know it’s not uncommon, and I believe it all comes back to the question of, why share now? I suppose I just felt ready.”
