dock said his inspiration for making music began early on with his mother, a teacher and poet. During his childhood, he said he wrote poems in order to gain screen time. This system introduced him to his first form of a creative process — embracing all ideas, good and bad.
“This kind of taught me how to write effectively and creatively, and not be afraid of a bad idea,” Paddock said. “Oftentimes, you have to get through the bad ideas to get to the good ones.”
Having attended Ohio State from 2018 to 2022 and studied strategic communications with a minor in Spanish and vocal performance, Paddock’s time as a Buckeye was akin to that of many students. He participated in Ohio State’s Crew Club and served as a resident advisor. However, the year 2020 brought a significant change to his university life as he and the rest of the university were abruptly sent home due to COVID-19. During this time at home, Paddock took the opportunity to create a DIY studio in his dad’s basement and honed his music-making skills.
“I kind of learned how to not suck there,” Paddock reflected.
Upon returning to campus, Paddock transformed his studio setup to fit into his dorm at Bowen House. It was there that he crossed paths with his bandmates and began the journey to the success he enjoys today. Paddock’s band consists of Max Lew, Adrian Oliver, and Caelan Quigley, each playing a pivotal role in bringing his pop-rock, folk-inspired music to life. Relationships and collaborations formed over time, with each member of the band bringing a unique skill set to the group.
Having opened for prominent artists such as Waka Flocka Flame and MAX at the Ohio Union Activities Board’s Welcome Back concert in 2021, Paddock’s big break came from a series of headlining gigs at prominent Columbus venues like The Basement and A&R Bar. His journey culminated in his first arena performance opening for the alternative-rock band Wallows in Harrisonburg, Va. Consequently, Paddock and his band have continually climbed the ladder of success, resulting in the upcoming fourth annual “Columbus Against The World” concert at Newport Music Hall on March 7.
Hosted by Paddock, the event will feature performances from Paddock himself, Douglas Katula, and Sunday Driver, all of whom are also former Buckeyes. The significance of the event lies not only in the talent being Ohio State alumni but also in the unwavering commitment to Columbus. From merchandise to production, every aspect of the show embraces the essence of the city, its vendors, and its artists. Paddock’s emphasis on locally sourced goods and services underscores his dedication to his roots.
“Columbus Against The World” is more than just a title — it’s a representation of the community spirit and support that drives the event. Attendees can look forward to an evening filled with familiar cover songs and original music, all within the lively and warm atmosphere of the Newport Music Hall. Paddock’s vision of bringing together a crowd of friends to celebrate music and creativity embodies the essence of the Columbus music scene.
