First glimpse of Kratos and Atreus in Amazon’s God of War series
Amazon has unveiled a glimpse of its upcoming God of War series, showcasing the dynamic duo of Kratos and Atreus. The captivating image released features Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son, Atreus. Fans were quick to notice that this iteration of Atreus appears to be a younger version compared to the character from the video games.
According to an official description, Atreus, the 10-year-old son of Kratos, had a sheltered upbringing in a secluded forest cabin. Raised mainly by his mother, Faye, Atreus possesses exceptional archery skills, a fondness for animals, and an insatiable curiosity about the world beyond his forest abode. Following his mother’s passing, he finds himself with a distant father, Kratos, with whom he shares a strained relationship. Despite the cold exterior, Atreus desires his father’s acceptance and is determined to demonstrate his strength in a perilous world.
Ryan Hurst, known for his portrayal of Thor in the video game God of War Ragnarok, will embody the role of Kratos in the upcoming series. The official description teases the unfolding narrative of the show, stating that Kratos endeavors to impart wisdom to his son on godhood, while Atreus, in turn, strives to humanize his father.
Joining the cast are Teresa Palmer, Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Mandy Patinkin, portraying Sif, Heimdall, Thor, and Odin, respectively. Additional cast members include Alastair Duncan reprising his role as Mimir, along with newcomers Danny Woodburn as Brok and Jeff Gulka as Sindri. Notably, Ed Skrein of Deadpool fame takes on the role of Baldur.
Production for the God of War series is currently underway in Vancouver, with showrunner Ronald D. Moore, acclaimed for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek Deep Space Nine, overseeing the project. The series marks a collaboration between PlayStation Productions, Tall Ship Productions, Sony, and Amazon, with Cory Barlog, the renowned writer and director of God of War, and Hermen Hulst from Sony Interactive Entertainment serving as executive producers.
Initially announced in early 2022, the live-action adaptation of God of War faced setbacks leading to a change in creative direction. Following the appointment of showrunner Ronald D. Moore in late 2024 and director Frederick E.O. Toye, the series found its footing. While an official release date has yet to be disclosed, fans eagerly await the series’ debut.
As anticipation builds for the God of War series, viewers can delve into Ronald D. Moore’s insightful interview from SDCC 2025, where he elaborates on his artistic vision for the show. With an all-star cast, seasoned creators, and a beloved source material, Amazon’s God of War promises an epic and immersive storytelling experience for fans of the iconic video game franchise.
