Swedish rock group The Gems has just released their second album, titled “Year Of The Snake,” through Napalm Records. To mark this occasion, the band has collaborated with Metal Insider to provide a detailed breakdown of each track on the album.

The album kicks off with “WALLS,” a song that revolves around breaking down barriers and moving forward into the unknown, leaving the past behind. It sets the tone for the record with a familiar harmony style from their previous work. Following this is the title track, “YEAR OF THE SNAKE,” which encapsulates themes of transformation, renewal, and wisdom. Drawing parallels to a snake shedding its skin, the song urges listeners to adopt a more reflective approach to life’s changes through a classic heavy metal sound.

“GRAVITY,” an 80s-inspired rock anthem, encourages chasing dreams wholeheartedly without making compromises. Featuring Tommy Johansson, the song showcases powerful vocals and a vibrant rock energy. “DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH” pays homage to the challenges faced during life on the road with its groovy undertones that seamlessly transition into an energetic explosion.

“LIVE AND LET GO” is a high-octane rock track that emphasizes letting go of the past and embracing the future with authenticity. “CLOUT CHASER” is a sing-along friendly piece that addresses shallow individuals who seek attention, celebrating the band’s distance from such people. “HOT BAIT,” inspired by Van Halen, narrates the excitement of achieving one’s desires from a food lover’s perspective.

“FORGIVE AND FORGET” is an emotional ballad reflecting the difficulty of moving on from someone significant. With elements of musical theater, the song features heartfelt emotions, key changes, and a poignant guitar solo. “GO ALONG TO GET ALONG” explores the idea of forging one’s unique path against societal norms, blending 80s influences with a disco touch.

“MATH,” a Zeppelin-inspired track, delves into the frustration of encountering individuals who make empty promises. The song combines groovy elements with fast-paced verses and a catchy chorus. “FIREBIRD” symbolizes greed and the perpetual pursuit of more, offering a classic rock sound as an optimistic outlet for collective frustrations.

“STARS” embraces heavy shuffles reminiscent of bands like Kansas and Europe, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself whilst pursuing goals. “BUCKLE UP,” a groovy Led Zeppelin-meets-Rage Against the Machine track, serves as a prelude to the energy and excitement of a live performance by The Gems. Lastly, “HAPPY WATER” pays homage to Vietnamese moonshine, embodied in a Motörhead-inspired party anthem that encourages spontaneity and revelry.

The Gems’ “Year Of The Snake” is a diverse collection of tracks, each offering a unique perspective on life’s challenges and triumphs, presented through an engaging blend of musical influences and personal experiences.
