Melissa Etheridge surprised by her reaction to Rock Hall nod
Melissa Etheridge had a surprising moment when her management team contacted her one morning in February. Little did she know that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had just revealed its nominees for 2026, and her management typically doesn’t call unless it’s urgent.
“When they called, I thought, ‘What could this be?'” Melissa remembered. “It’s either bad news or something really good.”
Although Melissa has attended the Rock Hall induction ceremony in the past, including in 1995 when she inducted Janis Joplin, she didn’t give much thought to her own career aligning with the Hall of Fame until recently.
She confessed that something had shifted in her perspective as of late. Each year, during the winter announcement of the nominees, she pondered if she would ever receive that call. The same call she received this past winter.
“I’ve been eligible for about 12 years now, which is okay,” Melissa reflected. “Every year, it’s like a dream in the sky. There’s nothing you can do to influence it. You just hope that your body of work is acknowledged. This year, it hit me differently. I even shed a few tears.
“It struck me how much this acknowledgment means to me. It carries more weight than I had anticipated. It’s truly meaningful to be recognized like that.”
Melissa shared her sentiments in a candid conversation on Q104.3 New York’s Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke.
For Melissa, a visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would be a perfect conclusion to a hectic year. She is currently on a North American tour scheduled through September and is set to release a new album, Rise, on Friday, March 27.

“I realized how much this acknowledgment means to me. It holds more significance than I had realized. Being recognized in this way is truly remarkable.”
