New Film Depicts Raw Human Experience of Birth with Punk Soundtrack
Tackling the daring subject of childbirth with a punk twist, “Birth is for P*ssies” ventures into uncharted territory in the world of television. At the heart of the show is Hannah Shealy, a birth doula, whose unconventional experiences at doula training prompted her to challenge the stereotypical portrayals of birth in the media.
In the midst of attending various classes and diving into the world of birth preparation, Shealy couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast between cinematic depictions of birth and the raw, authentic stories that she encountered. Describing birth as a captivating narrative that unfolds before the miraculous moment of a baby’s arrival, Shealy sought to shed light on the untold stories of the journey toward childbirth.
Inspired by her work with expecting mothers and fueled by the desire to empower women, Shealy embarked on the ambitious task of creating a show that would redefine the narrative surrounding labor and motherhood. Enter Celine Sutter, the self-proclaimed “indie warrior” who took on the challenge of producing “Birth is for P*ssies” after being captivated by the script’s message.
With the show’s premiere at SXSW as part of the Independent TV Pilot Program, audiences were treated to a unique perspective on birth, showcasing the stories of two vastly different worlds. Through Shealy’s character, Maya, viewers witnessed the juxtaposition of birth experiences, from an affluent couple in Tribeca to a single mother in the Bronx facing limited resources.
Embracing the punk rock essence of birth, Shealy sought to infuse the show with a soundtrack that mirrored the raw intensity of the birthing process. This led her to collaborate with King Princess, an alternative pop star known for their unapologetically bold music. Drawing inspiration from the punk genre and incorporating elements of femininity, King Princess crafted a unique soundtrack that breathed life into the show’s narrative.
For King Princess, the partnership between music and film was a natural fusion, with both mediums enhancing the overall viewing experience. Their approach to the soundtrack aimed to challenge preconceived notions of beauty and grace associated with birth, opting instead for a raw and guttural sound that echoed the punk ethos.
As the pilot garnered praise at SXSW, winning the Audience Award for the Independent TV Pilot Competition, the creators of “Birth is for P*ssies” celebrated a promising start to their groundbreaking project. In a landscape where reproductive rights are under constant threat, the show’s unapologetic portrayal of childbirth serves as a beacon of empowerment and authenticity in a world often clouded by misconceptions.
Through the marriage of punk rock aesthetics and the exploration of birth narratives, “Birth is for P*ssies” offers a fresh perspective on a universal experience, challenging viewers to embrace the raw, unfiltered reality of childbirth. With a soundtrack that mirrors the intensity of the birthing process and a narrative that seeks to empower and enlighten, the show stands as a testament to the resilience and strength of women in the face of adversity.
