The upcoming album by The Yum Yum Tree, set to release on April 10, evokes a distinct Atlanta vibe while being recorded in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios near Bath, England. The album, titled Turn Down the Noise, captures the essence of the ’90s alternative rock scene that put Georgia on the map with bands like Collective Soul, Drivin N Cryin, and R.E.M.

Andy Gish, the bassist and vocalist of The Yum Yum Tree, shared her thoughts over a meeting at a local cafe. Reflecting on the changes in Atlanta’s landscape, she expressed her nostalgia for the city’s past while acknowledging the rapid development that sometimes makes her feel disoriented. The song “Porchlight” from the new album delves into the loss of communal spaces like porches, which hold sentimental value for many residents.

Gish’s passion for authenticity shines through her music, as she believes that true art emerges from genuine experiences and imperfections. Despite the band’s gritty alt-rock sound, recording at Real World Studios allowed them to tap into a creative energy that aligned with their artistic vision. Gish recalled a surreal encounter with Peter Gabriel during her days as a primatologist, where they bonded over a shared love for music.

Although Gish initially struggled with feelings of inadequacy while recording at a renowned studio like Real World, she eventually found her footing and embraced the opportunity to create music in such a legendary setting. Her dream of providing a space for emerging artists to explore their creativity reflects her commitment to fostering a supportive artistic community.

As The Yum Yum Tree prepares for the album release and an upcoming performance at The EARL on April 4, Gish’s dedication to authentic expression and genuine connections serves as a driving force behind their music. Their album, Turn Down the Noise, promises to offer listeners a soulful and raw rock experience that harkens back to Atlanta’s rich musical history.
