Keith Carne debuts new album “Magenta Light”
Keith Carne’s debut album as a leader, Magenta Light, is a unique blend of droney space and dance rhythms, with indie-pop undertones. The album, set to release on April 20, 2026, is characterized by atmospheric, instrumental themes that tie together a series of melancholic-pop songs exploring themes of connection and dislocation. Carne draws inspiration from his wife’s vision of a magenta light pouring from his face, which sparked the creative process for this album.
This album marks a departure from Carne’s previous work as a supporting musician for various bands. Having spent the last 13 years touring with We Are Scientists as a drummer and backing vocalist, and contributing to their studio albums, Carne steps into the spotlight with Magenta Light. He merges elements of Pharoah Sanders’s spiritual jazz with Fred Again’s dance anthems to create a sound that is both intimate and otherworldly.
The choice of the color magenta as the album’s namesake holds personal significance for Carne, who has been fascinated with the color since childhood. He reflects on his early association of pink with certain gender stereotypes from the 90s but appreciates the shift in societal norms that allow for greater self-expression in 2026.
Born and raised in central New Jersey, Carne’s musical journey began in the local DIY music scene. While formally trained in jazz performance at Rutgers University, his true education came from weekends spent playing with indie rock bands across the tristate area. These experiences shaped his musical identity and prepared him for his diverse career as a musician.
Carne’s approach to music-making is akin to conducting an orchestra from behind the drum set, a skill he honed over years of performing and recording with various ensembles. Despite being primarily a drummer, Carne played most of the instruments on Magenta Light, capturing a range of textures and moods in his Midtown Manhattan studio. Collaborating with friends and bandmates on additional tracks, he crafted a layered and immersive listening experience for his audience.
Beyond his music career, Carne is a dedicated drum teacher and writer, having authored instructional materials and contributed to music publications. His passion for music extends to various interests including hiking, running, and cinema. Carne plans to celebrate the release of Magenta Light, coinciding with his 40th birthday, with a live performance at Union Pool in Brooklyn.
