After the success of their Canadian headline tour, Crown Lands, a dynamic Canadian progressive rock duo, have unveiled their latest single, ‘Blackstar’. The track is part of their forthcoming studio album ‘Apocalypse,’ which promises to be their most ambitious and fully realized work yet, scheduled for release on May 15, 2026.
‘Blackstar’ tells the story of its namesake, delving into his ascent to power within the Syndicate, his conquests over the Dragon Riders of Karagon, and the tragic loss of his family during a civil war on his home planet. The song is described as a cosmic space-prog metal interpretation of an old-western murder ballad, akin to Marty Robbin’s ‘Big Iron,’ chronicling Blackstar’s relentless journey through the galaxy, leaving destruction in his wake.
The band, comprising Kevin Comeau, further elaborates on the album by showcasing another piece, ‘Through the Looking Glass,’ through a captivating video. Kevin Comeau explains, “That record gave us the confidence to realize we could make a Crown Lands album in our own space, without a major-label budget or a big, fancy studio.” This decision paved the way for ‘Apocalypse,’ with a large portion of the album crafted within the familiar confines of their workspace since 2020. To elevate key moments on the album, Crown Lands collaborated with producers Nick Raskulinecz and David Bottrill.
