Celebrating SWV’s 30th Anniversary with R&B Bridgez: ‘New Beginning’

SWV, also known as Sisters With Voices, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their sophomore album “New Beginning,” released on April 23, 1996, via RCA. Hailing from New York City, SWV emerged as a standout group in the early ’90s, incorporating New Jack Swing and Hip Hop elements into their R&B style. Comprised of Cheryl “Coko” Clemons, Tamara Johnson-George, and Leanne “LeLee” Lyons, SWV’s journey to success began in their school days in Brooklyn and the Bronx as Female Edition, inspired by New Edition.

Initially, the trio’s music endeavors were aimed at meeting New Edition, but their raw talent and dedication, coupled with producer Donald “Dee” Bowden’s guidance and manager Maureen Singleton’s support, led them to sign with RCA Records. In 1992, SWV released their debut album, “It’s About Time,” recording a string of top-ten R&B hits, including chart-toppers like “I’m So Into You,” “Right Here,” “Downtown,” “You’re Always on my Mind,” and the iconic “Weak.” With successful hits and collaborations like the remix of “Right Here/Human Nature” with Teddy Riley and the Wu Tang Clan’s “Anything,” SWV solidified their position as a commercial force in the music industry.

Following the success of “It’s About Time,” SWV received several award nominations, including a Grammy Award, an American Music Award, and The Source Award in 1993. They also won a Children’s Choice Award and a BET “Best of Video Soul” Award, captivating audiences with their unique round-the-way girl appeal and Coko’s distinctive style. Their debut album went on to sell over 5 million records worldwide, becoming the second-best-selling album of 1993.
