The melody of Village People’s iconic song “Y.M.C.A.” echoed through the Schuylkill Haven Senior Citizens Club, resurrecting fond memories of the past for both the young and old in attendance. The Schuylkill Haven Elementary students, known as the Little Hurricanes, captivated the audience with their rendition of the disco hit during a recent gathering. The room erupted in applause, and some enthusiastic guests enthusiastically participated in the choreographed dance moves that accompanied the familiar tune that once dominated Billboard’s Hot Top 100 for 26 weeks in 1979.

Ruth Tucci, the president of the senior citizens club, couldn’t contain her excitement as she reminisced about her past encounters with the song. She revealed instances of dancing to “Y.M.C.A.” at weddings, the Jersey shore, and even the local VFW, underscoring the track’s enduring popularity over the years. The song’s infectious beat prompted audience members like Karen Reading, who vividly recalled a vibrant performance by the Village People at Musikfest in Bethlehem during the 1980s. The song had a magical effect on the crowd, igniting a collective dance frenzy that transported them to another time.

Bobbi Spence, a former New York City resident, fondly recollected her evenings spent grooving to “Y.M.C.A.” at Fudgie’s night spot in Scarsdale, where the song was a staple on the playlist. The energetic performance by the Little Hurricanes not only evoked nostalgia but also showcased the timeless appeal of the track, bridging the generation gap in its universal charm.

The spirited rendition of classic hits like “Y.M.C.A.,” as well as Bill Haley & His Comets’ “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” and The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” demonstrated the students’ musical prowess and enthusiasm. Under the guidance of Corrine Houtz, a dedicated music teacher at Schuylkill Haven Elementary School, the third and fourth graders diligently rehearsed their routines since January. The Little Hurricanes, a group of after-school music enthusiasts, wholeheartedly volunteered for the program, showcasing their passion for music and performance.

The performance at the senior citizens club served as a prelude to the upcoming “Dancing Shoes” concert scheduled for May 13 at the Schuylkill Haven High School Auditorium. The event not only celebrated the enduring power of music but also inspired the senior citizens to sign up for a bus trip to watch a stage production of John Waters’ “Hairspray.” This collective appreciation for music transcended age barriers, uniting the community in a shared love for timeless melodies and unforgettable tunes.
