Dave Graney And Clare Moore have unveiled their latest offering, Laburnum Of The Mind, a fresh studio album that was recorded in Melbourne and coincides with an extensive Australian tour that is set to kick off this week. This dynamic duo, with a collaboration that spans nearly five decades, has once again wowed audiences with Hits Are The Worst and I Ain’t Got No Float, the singles from the new record.

Graney and Moore have cemented themselves as a lasting independent creative force in Australia, choosing to label this album simply as “a rock record,” a nod to their dedication to staying true to their core influences while defying traditional genre boundaries. As they hit the road for an extensive tour, the timing of this album’s release could not be more perfect for fans eager to experience their live performances.

Drawing from a rich tapestry of rock traditions, Laburnum Of The Mind showcases a wide array of musical influences, from The Doors to Blue Oyster Cult. The album’s musical palette incorporates intricate rhythmic patterns, Latin grooves, and complex chord structures, creating a balanced mix of polished refinement and raw spontaneity that sets it apart from their previous works.

The album’s structure reflects this duality, with the first half featuring tight, groove-driven tracks that exude precision and energy, while the second half delves into more experimental territory with tracks like Laburnum Of The Mind and Little Bands Suck, pushing the boundaries of conventional time signatures and stylistic norms.

Recorded at Soundpark in Melbourne with engineer Idge, who also mastered the album, Graney and Moore took on the majority of the instrumentation themselves, with guitarist Stuart Perera joining them on two tracks. The album’s mixing was handled by the duo themselves, underscoring their commitment to maintaining creative control over every aspect of their production process.

The album’s title, inspired by a stop on Melbourne’s Belgrave train line, reflects Graney’s interest in using everyday geography as lyrical inspiration, turning mundane details into evocative imagery. Laburnum Of The Mind is the latest addition to a series of releases by Dave Graney And Clare Moore since 2017, showcasing their dedication to creating work that exists outside commercial cycles while maintaining a steady output.

Graney’s storied career, which began in Adelaide in the late 1970s with The Moodists and later Dave Graney And The Coral Snakes, has solidified his status as a unique voice in Australian rock, earning him accolades such as an ARIA Award for Best Male Artist in 1996. His diverse projects, including The Dave Graney Show and The Lurid Yellow Mist, as well as his work as an author and broadcaster, further highlight his versatility and creativity.

Laburnum Of The Mind is emblematic of the increasing trend of legacy artists like Graney and Moore opting for independent production models, eschewing traditional label structures in favor of self-recording, self-releasing, and direct touring. This approach allows for a more immediate connection between their recorded material and the live experience, creating a more intimate and authentic connection with their audience.

As they gear up for their Australian tour, Graney and Moore are poised to showcase their new material to fans across multiple states, reaffirming their commitment to engaging with audiences through electrifying live performances. Laburnum Of The Mind is now available on CD, vinyl, and streaming platforms, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the creative universe of this iconic duo.
