Charli XCX set to drop new single “Rock Music”
Charli XCX, known for hits like Boom Clap and I Love It, is set to debut a new single titled Rock Music. The 33-year-old singer, born Charlotte Aitchison, will drop the song alongside an accompanying music video at 9 pm on Thursday. The release is anticipated to serve as the lead single for her upcoming album.
In a teaser clip announcing the impending launch, a woman in stilettos can be seen crushing a guitar, symbolizing a departure from her usual sound. Additionally, a post on Charli’s secondary Instagram account, B.Sides, features a monochromatic image of her with a band playing guitars, captioned “tonight.”
This announcement comes on the heels of an interview in Vogue that hinted at Charli’s venture into rock music, contrasting with her earlier denial on Instagram about creating a rock album. The songstress emphasized her desire to explore new creative avenues, stating, “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad, but what’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be.”
The upcoming album is expected to steer away from Charli’s signature auto-tune style, as revealed in the Vogue feature. Following her recent project, a companion album to Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights film, and the successful Brat album, Charli is looking to break new ground artistically.
Reflecting on her new music endeavor, Charli expressed her affection for art and its impact on her life, sharing that losing her artistic outlet would be a profound loss. She emphasized the album’s departure from conventional masculinity, aiming to inject humor and authenticity into her music while avoiding overly macho themes.
In a departure from her previous work, Charli noted her intention to refrain from featuring her husband, George Daniel from The 1975, in her new album. Despite references to their relationship on previous tracks like Club Classics and Sympathy Is A Knife from Brat, she cited a desire to explore unconventional facets of married life in her music.
Charli’s recent foray into film with projects like The Moment, a semi-fictional film documenting the release of Brat and subsequent world tour, has showcased her diverse talents. Further roles in films like Erupcja and 100 Nights Of Hero highlight her interest in storytelling beyond music.
With two UK number one singles and three chart-topping albums under her belt, Charli XCX’s upcoming single Rock Music promises to be a transformative addition to her already distinguished discography. Embracing change and pushing boundaries, Charli continues to captivate audiences with her innovative approach to music-making.
