In Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, the Shepherd University baseball team experienced a tough loss to the formidable No. 15/16 West Chester team in the PSAC Baseball Tournament. The game resulted in a 13-5 defeat for Shepherd, effectively ending their run in the tournament.

The Rams started the game strong with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, courtesy of run-scoring singles from senior first baseman Nik Rubendall and freshman outfielder Alex Rose. Despite their early advantage, West Chester managed to get on the scoreboard with a run of their own in the first inning when Caleb Strawhecker crossed the plate after being walked and later scored on a play that saw Drew Simpson getting picked off.

However, the tide turned in the third inning when West Chester exploded with eight runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Two-run singles from Austin Stalker and Tanner Donati were instrumental in driving their offensive surge. The Golden Rams continued to pile on in the fourth with three more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Donati.

Shepherd managed to add a run in the fifth inning when redshirt junior outfielder Bodie Pullen singled and later scored. The team showed signs of life in the eighth inning by adding two more runs to trim the deficit to 12-5. The efforts of redshirt junior catcher Wyatt Lamb and Rose paid off as they contributed to narrowing the score gap.

Although Shepherd displayed resilience in the late innings, it was not enough to overcome West Chester’s commanding lead. Christian Michak played a pivotal role for West Chester, scoring three runs and driving in two to spearhead their victory. Meanwhile, Ethan Burgreen’s standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-4, was a bright spot for the Rams in an otherwise challenging game.

On the pitching front, Julian Costa secured the win for West Chester, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out five. In contrast, Shepherd’s sophomore pitcher Henry Ortiz took the loss after pitching 2.0 innings and surrendering five earned runs.

The game showcased the competitive spirit and talent of both teams, with West Chester ultimately emerging victorious. Despite the tough loss, Shepherd’s baseball team displayed resilience and determination throughout the contest.
