Sleaford Mods to perform at Music Hall of Williamsburg
My experience at the Music Hall of Williamsburg for the Sleaford Mods show was truly unforgettable. This venue, a staple in Brooklyn’s indie music scene since 2007, exuded an intimate and relaxed atmosphere as fans eagerly gathered for the performance. The English post-punk duo, comprised of vocalist Jason Williamson and instrumentalist Andrew Fearn, was on tour to promote their 13th studio album, The Demise of Planet X (Rough Trade Records).
Formed in 2007 and originating from Nottingham, the Sleaford Mods had already completed legs of their tour in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand before making their way to North America. This particular show in Brooklyn was highly anticipated, with tickets selling out quickly and an additional night added to accommodate the demand. Opening for both nights was Dazy, a power-punk project hailing from Richmond, Virginia, whose energetic set primed the audience for the main act.
As the clock struck 9:00 pm, Sleaford Mods took the stage in a simple yet captivating setup – just the two Brits, a microphone, and a computer. The dynamic between Williamson’s passionate, profanity-laced vocals and Fearn’s musical accompaniment was enthralling. Songs like “Jobseeker,” “Kebab Spider,” and “Tied Up in Nottz” delved into topics ranging from unemployment to drug use, showcasing the duo’s gritty and honest lyrical style.
Throughout the performance, Fearn’s steady presence on stage right, juxtaposed with Williamson’s frenetic movements, created a visually striking display. The setlist spanned tracks from The Demise of Planet X and various other albums in Sleaford Mods’ extensive discography, culminating in a cover of Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls,” a nod to their British synth-pop roots.
The Demise of Planet X tour, wrapping up later in the Pacific Northwest, has been a testament to the duo’s enduring appeal and powerful stage presence. Following the tour’s conclusion, Williamson and Fearn will have a well-deserved break before heading to Spain for the Azkena Rock Festival in June. For fans looking to engage further with Williamson’s creative ventures, options include signing up for his “Monthly Dumps” newsletter, exploring his acting in the film Game, or enjoying curated playlists of his favorite tracks.
The Sleaford Mods show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg was a night to remember, showcasing the band’s raw talent and unwavering dedication to their craft. With upcoming tour dates in Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, and Vancouver, fans across North America have the chance to experience the duo’s electrifying performance firsthand.
