Hovvdy reveals upcoming album ‘Big World’ with new single “Try Try Try”
Hovvdy has been making music for quite some time now, and their hard work has paid off with the success of their ambitious self-titled double album, which was well-received in 2024. Following this, they collaborated with Bruno Plum, and Charlie Martin also worked on Teethe’s well-received LP, Magic Of The Sale. Initially starting out in Austin, the duo comprising Martin and Will Taylor is now based in Nashville and is venturing into writing songs for other artists as well. This shift in their musical career journey can be seen reflected in their latest album announcement for “Big World.”
The album was recorded in a blend of Nashville and Asheville, with producer Ben Littlejohn, a longtime collaborator, joining them on this project. Departing from their usual approach, for “Big World,” Hovvdy opted to bring fully composed instrumentals to the studio, leaving the lyrics to be spontaneously crafted during the recording process. This change was intended to evoke different emotions and deliver a more focused and concise musical experience for their fans. Martin expressed in a press release, “The last record felt like such a generous offering: a double-album, deeply personal, you can literally hear me crying on some songs. With this one, we wanted to take on the challenge of making something more concise and to the point, and give the fans something that feels like a shorter but more exciting ride.”
The lead single from the album, titled “Try Try Try,” embodies this new direction. The track features a tight and propulsive power-pop sound, accompanied by vocals that experiment with a blend of drawl and vocal effects, creating a unique sonic experience. The music video for the song, directed by Michael Rees, showcases Hovvdy and their friends rocking out in a basement setting, adding a visual dimension to the track.
In addition to announcing their new album, Hovvdy also unveiled an extensive list of tour dates, including performances as opening acts for renowned artists such as Wilco and Bleachers. This tour schedule promises to bring their music to a wider audience and further solidify their presence in the music scene.
“Big World” is scheduled for release on August 14th under the Arts & Crafts label. Fans can pre-order the album to immerse themselves in Hovvdy’s latest musical endeavor that promises to be a captivating and dynamic journey through their evolving sound. With a blend of new influences and experimental elements, Hovvdy continues to push boundaries and explore new horizons in their musical craftsmanship.
