MICO releases new single “Like You Mean It” from debut album “When The Lights Turn On”
MICO, a 23-year-old alt-pop-rock artist, has revealed that his debut album, “When the lights turn on,” is set to release on June 26 via Columbia Records. Alongside this exciting news, he has also dropped a new single titled “Like you mean it” along with its official music video. This emotionally charged anthem showcases MICO’s heartfelt lyricism, featuring shimmering guitars and explosive drums that culminate in a cathartic chorus. The song explores the struggles of loving someone who only reciprocates connection when they are in need.
Reflecting on his latest release, MICO expressed, “It feels appropriate to kick off this new chapter with this song. It encapsulates a fusion of my established sound with new elements that are explored on this album. I poured my heart and soul into this track and the accompanying visuals, hoping that my passion shines through.”
Describing the song’s creation process, MICO revealed, “I had to simplify and unravel everything I was feeling at the time because there was a lot I needed to express. The chorus in this song serves as a continuous reality check for me.” He also shared, “This track delves into a sense of nostalgia from the early 2000s that has been overlooked in the current wave of revival. It was thrilling to add my personal touch to this genre of sound, as it represents a significant part of my musical upbringing.”
Accompanying the single is a new music video that expands on the enigmatic world of “Stillville,” an eerily flawless neighborhood initially introduced in the rollout of his previous single, “DREAMBOY.” In this visual narrative, MICO navigates through pristine streets and seemingly perfect suburban routines which gradually reveal underlying peculiarities and unsettling elements, transforming the idyllic facade into something more sinister.
“When the lights turn on” captures MICO’s transformation from a grassroots musician to an “internet hometown hero,” transitioning into an artist exploring uncharted territories in his career. Crafted during a dynamic year of sold-out tours, personal challenges, and rapid professional growth, the album contemplates the disorienting experience of outgrowing past relationships and environments that once defined him.
Throughout the album, MICO infuses the nostalgic charm and emotional depth of 2000s/2010s pop-punk with a contemporary alt-pop perspective, incorporating explosive hooks, hyperpop influences, and introspective songwriting. The end result is a coming-of-age masterpiece that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable, chronicling the journey of discovering one’s identity.
Originally named Miguel Veloso and hailing from Toronto, MICO initially captivated a loyal following through online performances on Discord, TikTok, and a collection of independently released tracks that helped him transition from an underground sensation to a global touring phenomenon. Currently, MICO boasts a follower base exceeding one million across various platforms, with a rapidly expanding community of “amicos” who have resonated with his transparent storytelling and genre-defying music.
