Gorillaz’ ninth album debuts at No. 7 on Billboard 200 chart

Gorillaz unveiled their latest album, “The Mountain,” on streaming platforms on February 27th. The renowned band’s ninth studio album secured the 7th spot on the Billboard 200 chart, achieving their third No. 1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart. Prior to embarking on this musical endeavor, band members Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett embarked on a journey to India seeking inspiration, a trip that was preceded by personal experiences of loss.

“The Mountain” delves into themes of grief, death, and the afterlife, as depicted through the perspectives of the band’s characters: bassist Murdoc, vocalist 2-D, guitarist Noodle, and drummer Russell Hobbs. The album’s opening track features a musician playing the song on a ravanahatha alongside the Hindu Jea Band Jaipur, setting the tone for the exploration of the profound topics showcased throughout the record.

Albarn described the album as a platform for voices to transcend beyond mortality, allowing creative expressions to endure even after physical existence ceases. The inclusion of vocals from deceased artists serves not only to showcase their artistry but also to emphasize the idea that artistic voices have a lasting impact beyond life.

One of the album’s tracks, “Damascus,” features collaborations with Yasiin Bey and Omar Souleyman and was initially intended for another album, “Plastic Beach,” before undergoing revisions for its inclusion in “The Mountain.” This particular song received a nomination at the Ivor Novello Awards in the Best Contemporary Song category, shedding light on the songwriting aspect as well as the impressive guest lineup.

Furthermore, three tracks from the album, namely “The Mountain,” “The Moon Cave,” and “The Sad God,” have been transformed into an animated short film utilizing hand-drawn animation techniques. The meticulous creation process spanned 18 months, resulting in a visually captivating accompaniment to the music.
