After a hiatus following his seventh LP “What’s For Breakfast?”, Dent May, the versatile psych-pop talent, has exciting news for fans with the announcement of his new album “The Big One.” The title track is now available and offers a profound, reflective daydream experience. May sheds light on the album and song’s title, explaining that “The Big One” refers to the much-anticipated natural disaster that could potentially bring about the end of the world. However, the song delves deeper into personal life-altering moments that push individuals out of their comfort zones. While death is undoubtedly the ultimate “big one,” the track explores the smaller instances in life where we are confronted with the fleeting nature of our existence. It poses the question of how we cope in the face of inevitable destruction, prompting introspection on whether we will be okay.

Despite the weighty subject matter, May tackles themes of catastrophe with a poignant sentimentality, infusing the song with a paradoxical sense of uplifting beauty. The opening lyrics strike a chord with listeners, expressing sentiments of being “Born with a broken heart/ Sit around all day waiting for my life to start.” However, May’s soulful delivery lends a sense of grace that tempers the emotional impact of the lyrics. Complementing the track is a captivating music video directed by Ambar Navarro, enhancing the overall experience for fans.
