The well-known magical girl anime and manga series Sailor Moon is expanding its tangible presence on the streets of Tokyo with a distinct urban design endeavor.
Local officials in Minato Ward have recently finished the installment of two fresh decorative manhole covers, raising the total count of specialized series landmarks within the jurisdiction to seven. Initially appearing in Nakayoshi magazine back in 1991, the acclaimed creation by Naoko Takeuchi transformed the magical girl landscape by merging traditional romantic themes with cosmic superhero adventures.
The narrative tracks a group of teenage protectors assigned with safeguarding the planet from antagonistic cosmic energies while balancing their everyday school experiences. Despite the overarching lore often alluding to ancient lunar realms, the tale is intrinsically linked to the physical regions of Minato Ward, where the protagonists reside, learn, and shield the metropolis. The initial batch of five street fixtures primarily showcased the core Inner Senshi and Tuxedo Mask, resulting in an incomplete character lineup.
The most recent pair of additions formally introduces the complete ensemble of ten guardians to the neighborhood, incorporating the Outer Senshi alongside Sailor Chibi Moon into the diverse cast roster. These latest street embellishments showcase two unique full-group thematic sets:
– Ten Sailor Senshi (Sakura) Model: Situated near Tokyo Midtown, this design depicts the entire congregation of ten cosmic heroes gathered beneath a lush canopy of cherry blossoms.
– Ten Sailor Senshi (Rainbow) Model: Located near JR Takanawa Gateway Station, this variant illustrates the guardian ensemble united against a vivid pastel rainbow background.
To facilitate visitors in exploring the vicinity and locating each concealed embellishment, administrative establishments have introduced an updated version of the official manhole map. Physical copies are set to be distributed progressively beginning Wednesday, May 27, 2026, across different local travel hubs, including the Minato Ward Tourism Information Center branches positioned at Fuda-no-Tsuji Square and Tokyo Tower. The digital rendition of the map is also available for fans who cannot access a distribution spot in person.
As a gesture to commemorate the introduction of the new designs, local authorities have extended the public exhibition period for life-sized replica segments of the initial five covers. These authentic replicas will be on view at the Minato Ward Tourism Information Center in Fuda-no-Tsuji Square until Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
