Dogstar’s comeback is still going strong

Dogstar, the alt-rock trio from Los Angeles, recently made a significant comeback after reuniting for their first public performance in over two decades at Napa’s annual BottleRock festival. The band, which gained a loyal following in the post-grunge 1990s before disbanding in 2002, found themselves on stage again alongside major acts like Post Malone and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Expectations were low before their performance, with singer-guitarist Bret Domrose reminiscing about the initial emptiness of the crowd moments before they went on stage. However, to their surprise, the vast green lawn quickly filled up with enthusiastic fans, setting off a successful return for Dogstar. Drummer Robert Mailhouse recalls how that show marked the beginning of their journey back into the music scene.

Following their well-received return, Dogstar released a reunion album in 2023 titled “Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees” and embarked on a world tour consisting of almost 100 shows. Encouraged by their positive reception, the group recently released another album, “All In Now,” as they gear up for summer tours across Europe and the United States. Before heading overseas, Dogstar is scheduled to perform at the Grammy Museum in downtown L.A.

Reflecting on their resurgence, the band members express genuine enjoyment at being back on stage together. Domrose notes that the experience now feels even more rewarding and enjoyable than it did in the past. Gathered over beers at Pasadena’s Sid the Cat Auditorium, Domrose, Reeves, and Mailhouse discuss their renewed passion for performing, which often leads to the creation of new songs during rehearsals.

According to Mailhouse, Dogstar has effortlessly settled back into their groove, still maintaining the solid power trio dynamic that characterized their music during the post-grunge era. The trio’s chemistry is palpable as they delve into the joy of playing together and the creative energy that fuels their performances.
