Reviving the Unreleased Squeeze Concept Album – Guitar World

The lost album Trixies by the band Squeeze, which was shelved for 52 years, has been resurrected by the band’s singer and guitarist, Glenn Tilbrook. Discovered on a dusty demo cassette last year, the album was a blast from the past for Tilbrook, transporting him back to 1974 when the songs were first written. At the age of 68, Tilbrook reflects on his teenage self’s composition skills and how they evolved to shape Squeeze’s success in the late ’70s.

Tilbrook admits that the original Trixies demo couldn’t have been released due to the audio quality and his and Chris Difford’s (19) scrappy guitar work during their teenage years. However, these early compositions showcased the depth and sophistication that would establish Squeeze as prominent figures in Britain’s new wave music scene.

Trixies, a loosely structured concept album ranging from mellow lounge-jazz to Bowie-inspired space rock, provides a unique glimpse into the band’s alternative musical path. Tilbrook, now working with seasoned musicians, including members of the contemporary band, describes the experience of re-recording the album as a harmonious blend of youthful creativity and mature wisdom.

The album is set in a fictional nightclub, reminiscent of the Cabaret movie’s atmosphere. According to Tilbrook, Trixies embodied a glamorous yet uncertain future in the 1980s, populated by rockstars of the same era, which Squeeze would later become to some extent. It was a place where one could experience love or confrontation, reflecting the complexities and emotions of youth and creativity.

Tilbrook’s rediscovery of Trixies and the subsequent re-recording process symbolize a full-circle moment for the band. The contrast between the raw talent of their youth and the refined skills of seasoned musicians offers a rich and layered listening experience for fans and newcomers alike. The album’s unique blend of genres and storytelling creates a captivating narrative that transcends time and resonates with audiences of all ages.

Overall, the resurrection of Trixies serves as a testament to Squeeze’s enduring legacy and their ability to evolve creatively while staying true to their roots. Through this lost album, listeners are transported on a musical journey that celebrates the band’s past, present, and future, solidifying their position as iconic figures in the world of music.
