Cro-Mags release new song after six-year hiatus
The iconic New York hardcore band Cro-Mags has made a triumphant comeback with their latest single, signaling their first release in six years and reintroducing them as one of the most influential bands in the hardcore punk scene.
The band recently unveiled their new track, “Wired For Chaos,” along with a visually captivating music video directed by Rex Miller. This release comes after Cro-Mags signed with BLKIIBLK, the heavy metal division of the Frontiers Label Group, with plans to drop a full-length album in 2027.
Lead vocalist and bassist, Harley Flanagan, shared insights into the track, describing its dynamic structure. “It comes in with an aggressive metal intro befitting a UFC walk-in or a video game, then bursts into a more traditional HC thrash vibe before returning to a heavy beatdown at the end in an unmistakable Cro-Mags style,” said Flanagan.
Beyond its musical elements, “Wired For Chaos” delves into deeply personal themes rooted in Flanagan’s life experiences. The song explores the notion of being programmed and wired for chaos from birth, influenced by parental upbringing, childhood traumas, and resulting struggles with PTSD.
This latest release represents a new era for Cro-Mags, following their 2020 album, In The Beginning. Known for their aggressive blend of hardcore punk and thrash metal, Cro-Mags have solidified themselves as a seminal act in New York City’s heavy music landscape.
Founded in the early 1980s, Cro-Mags have been instrumental in shaping the hardcore music scene, extending their influence beyond hardcore punk to impact crossover thrash and other alternative heavy music genres. The band’s upcoming album, set for 2027, involves drummer Greyson Nekrutman and producer Arthur Rizk, known for his work with various metal acts.
The music video for “Wired For Chaos” showcases live footage from recent Cro-Mags performances, illustrating the band’s enduring connection with their fervent fan base. This release coincides with a period of activity for both Cro-Mags and Flanagan himself, following the documentary “Harley Flanagan: Wired For Chaos” hitting theaters in June 2025.
With a fresh label partnership, a powerful new single, and plans for a forthcoming album, the Cro-Mags are poised to continue their legacy that spans over four decades of shaping the hardcore punk and heavy music landscape.
